An envelope manufacturer has bucked the economic trend by increasing its turnover from £500,000 to £4m over seven years.

Lancashire-based Envelope Works said it has won 100 new clients in each of the last three years, including 40 since February, and that it was now producing 275,000 litho-printed envelopes per hour and supplying in excess of 1bn per year.

The increased volumes pushed turnover to £400,000 in March.

The company purchased new premises 18 months ago after previously renting, but said that it was already outgrowing its new building. It now plans to build a sales extension and production office and to take on an additional 12 sales staff over the next three years. It has recently appointed Mary Drury, who has come from SCR Envelopes, as sales manager.

Envelope Works managing director Mark Farrimond, who took over the company seven years ago, said:

“We are working very hard on marketing the business and we have developed a fantastic new website. We work closely with factories across the whole of Europe and we aim to offer the best European price. We offer immediate access to 150m envelopes.”

Farrimond added that company was aiming to expand further by developing its sales team.

“I am still only 40% of the way along my initial business plan. The plan is to get new sales staff on board with different areas of expertise so that we have a diverse team.” He said.

This exciting launch follows on from the other recent developments at the company including investments of two additional print presses, the first Halm Super Jet EM XL Printer and state of the art GMG Colour proofing machine.

They are the first envelope manufacturer in the UK to invest in this hi tech piece of machinery in the UK. This is the same machinery that is used by professional photographers.

The machine calibrates the colours to 100% accuracy, supporting the Quality Assurance processes that The Envelope Works operates to.

Furthermore, it ensures that the wet proof that the customer sees is 100% accurate. Also, it increases efficiency as the proofs are run through the new machine, and therefore not occupying a printing machine.

The GMG machine also offers additional features, including a ‘colour separator’ that removes ink that is not needed, estimated to save 30% on ink prices.

This is a continuation of the investment Mark Farrimond, Managing Director of the Envelope Works, is making within the business, to position it as the premier envelope solutions company in the UK.

This state of the art leading technology is a 2-colour wide-model taking up to C3 envelopes and offers on the fly control, touch screen and ink control.

The RRP of this product is $214,000.

“The now takes us to 3 four colour machines and 8 two colour machines” added Mark Farrimond, the Managing Director.

“Both machines have been in place since the beginning of August and the impact has been instant. Prior to the investment, we were finding that we simply could not keep up with the sheer volume of four colour enquiries we were receiving.”

The total outlay is in the region of £130,000 and is just part of the larger investment strategy that Mark Farrimond is currently implementing.

“My objective is to make The Envelope Works the number one envelope solutions company in the UK. We made the move to new premises at the start of this year and my intention is to create the most efficient, effective and scaleable factory possible.”
